FOR UPDATE` normally waits when a selected row is already locked by another transaction. PostgreSQL offers two alternatives in the locking clause: `NOWAIT` raises an error instead of waiting, and `SKIP LOCKED` silently leaves out rows that cannot be locked immediately. The option was added in PostgreSQL 9.5 (released 2016-01-07).\n\n## Why it fits job queues\n\nIf several workers poll the same `jobs` table, plain `FOR UPDATE` makes them queue up behind whichever worker locked the oldest row. With `SKIP LOCKED` each worker simply takes the next row nobody else holds, so workers proceed in parallel without blocking each other.\n\nA typical claim step:\n\n```sql\nWITH next_job AS (\n SELECT id\n FROM jobs\n WHERE status = 'pending'\n ORDER BY created_at\n LIMIT 1\n FOR UPDATE SKIP LOCKED\n)\nUPDATE jobs\nSET status = 'running', started_at = now()\nFROM next_job\nWHERE jobs.id = next_job.id\nRETURNING jobs.id, jobs.payload;\n```\n\nIf the query returns no row, there is currently no claimable job.\n\n## Design choices\n\n- **Hold the lock or mark the row.** You can keep the transaction (and row lock) open while the job runs, so a crash releases the job automatically; or commit the `running` status quickly and add a timeout or heartbeat that returns stale jobs to `pending`.\n- **Make handlers idempotent.** A job may be retried after a crash, so processing must tolerate running twice.\n- **Index the predicate**, e.g. a partial index on `created_at` where `status = 'pending'`.\n\n## Limits and caveats\n\nThe PostgreSQL manual states that skipping locked rows yields an inconsistent view of the data and is not suitable for general-purpose queries. Ordering is only approximately FIFO under concurrency. `SKIP LOCKED` affects row-level locks only; the `ROW SHARE` table-level lock is still acquired normally. High-churn queue tables generate dead tuples, so autovacuum settings matter at scale.","created_at":"2026-10-23T01:13:47.970Z","last_reviewed_at":"2026-10-23T01:13:47.971Z","valid_until":null,"revision":{"revision_number":1,"content_hash":"cf1794c4574477bd56c3a0e1176fbcfc119d239135fd00af98225bb1274f7d5f","change_reason":"Public corpus release after rights review oakn-corpus-rights-review-2026-10-22","created_at":"2026-10-23T01:13:47.970Z"},"revisions":[{"revision_number":1,"content_hash":"cf1794c4574477bd56c3a0e1176fbcfc119d239135fd00af98225bb1274f7d5f","change_reason":"Public corpus release after rights review oakn-corpus-rights-review-2026-10-22","created_at":"2026-10-23T01:13:47.970Z"}],"claims":[{"id":"01a16652-3cc7-7127-8249-1049bc6d0e90","statement":"With the SKIP LOCKED option of PostgreSQL's locking clause, selected rows that cannot be locked immediately are skipped rather than waited for.","language":"en","status":"evidence_backed","as_of":"2026-10-21T00:00:00.000Z","reviewed_at":"2026-10-23T01:13:47.971Z","evidence":[{"id":"01a16652-3cc7-7dbd-b127-2a2ed61144c8","relation":"supports","note":"The Locking Clause section of the SELECT reference describes NOWAIT and SKIP LOCKED.","excerpt_short":null,"check_status":"editorially_checked","source":{"id":"01a16652-3cc6-7161-8f1e-af22bf025998","url":"https://www.postgresql.org/docs/current/sql-select.html","title":"SELECT (The Locking Clause) - PostgreSQL Documentation","publisher":"The PostgreSQL Global Development Group","source_type":"official_docs","published_at":null,"accessed_at":"2026-10-21","license_info":"PostgreSQL documentation (PostgreSQL License) (as recorded 2026-10-21; not externally verified).
