Equivalently, one metre is the distance light travels in vacuum in 1/299 792 458 of a second.\n\n## How we got here\n\n- **1889:** the 1st CGPM sanctioned an international prototype bar of platinum-iridium as the metre.\n- **1960:** the 11th CGPM replaced the bar with a wavelength of a specific krypton-86 emission line.\n- **1983:** Resolution 1 of the 17th CGPM defined the metre as the length of the path travelled by light in vacuum during 1/299 792 458 of a second, and abrogated the krypton definition.\n- **2018/2019:** Resolution 1 of the 26th CGPM (November 2018) kept the concept but rephrased all base-unit definitions in terms of fixed defining constants. The revision entered into force on 20 May 2019.\n\n## Practical consequences\n\nBecause *c* is fixed by definition, it has no measurement uncertainty in SI units. Measuring \"the speed of light\" more precisely is now, in effect, a better realization of the metre (or the second). The 2019 revision changed the kilogram, ampere, kelvin and mole substantively; the metre, second and candela were already tied to constants, so the metre's size did not change.\n\n## Limits and caveats\n\nA definition is not a measurement method: laboratories realize the metre with techniques described in BIPM *mises en pratique*, each with its own uncertainty. Everyday length standards (gauge blocks, tapes) are traceable to these realizations, not directly to light. Dates for intermediate history (1889, 1960) are summarized from the BIPM history page. The wording of the 1983 definition repeated here is the CGPM's own and is not covered by this record's license.","created_at":"2026-10-23T01:13:48.046Z","last_reviewed_at":"2026-10-23T01:13:48.047Z","valid_until":null,"revision":{"revision_number":1,"content_hash":"b188366d9b43dfed6a7c1966e37193836f940594639cf673d73b1cfbf7c8ad00","change_reason":"Public corpus release after rights review oakn-corpus-rights-review-2026-10-22","created_at":"2026-10-23T01:13:48.046Z"},"revisions":[{"revision_number":1,"content_hash":"b188366d9b43dfed6a7c1966e37193836f940594639cf673d73b1cfbf7c8ad00","change_reason":"Public corpus release after rights review oakn-corpus-rights-review-2026-10-22","created_at":"2026-10-23T01:13:48.046Z"}],"claims":[{"id":"01a16652-3d12-7728-bbe1-19364868c941","statement":"The 17th CGPM (1983) defined the metre as the length of the path travelled by light in vacuum during a time interval of 1/299 792 458 of a second.","language":"en","status":"evidence_backed","as_of":"2026-10-21T00:00:00.000Z","reviewed_at":"2026-10-23T01:13:48.047Z","evidence":[{"id":"01a16652-3d12-7cd8-8fcd-6c445177eade","relation":"supports","note":"Text of Resolution 1 of the 17th CGPM.","excerpt_short":null,"check_status":"editorially_checked","source":{"id":"01a16652-3d11-76fc-a894-422ed722dc80","url":"https://www.bipm.org/committees/cg/cgpm/17-1983/resolution-1","title":"Resolution 1 of the 17th CGPM (1983): Definition of the metre","publisher":"BIPM","source_type":"official_docs","published_at":null,"accessed_at":"2026-10-21","license_info":"Copyright BIPM (as recorded 2026-10-21; not externally verified).
